Dear Wilma,
I am not sure where the Sir Richard Thomson comes from. I also dispute the Richard and Florence parentage. They were English. David was identified as a Scotsman - clearly his accent gave him away. Richard Thompson in Clerkenswell was a servant. David Thomson was extremely well educated and considered by Thomas Morton to be a scholar. His letter to the Earl of Arundel also proves the social level he was at. In addition, the Massachusetts grant from the Council of New England listed him as Mr. David Thomson, Gent.; children of household servants were not Gentlemen in the system prevalent at that time.

David Thomson of Corstorphine meets all the criteria. His father was an extremely wealthy minister (Rev. Richard Thomson) with stipends allocated by King James. His family was well connected too. - His father married into a family which included the Scottish ambassador to England and the Secretary of State of Scotland. David attended the University of Edinburg in 1602. And if the genealogy is valid, he was a direct descendant of King Robert II of Scotland through Alexander Steward, the Earl of Mar - the most famous man of his time. This Thomson line started with the Earl's illegitimate son, Sir Thomas Stewart (son of Thomas). Of course, the Earl was also an illegitimate son of Prince Alexander Stewart aka the Wolf of Baganock. However, this was a day and age when such children were given titles and lands - especially if they proved themselves in battle as both the Earl and his son did - and demonstrated their unflinching loyalty to the King.
